Hello Friends,

What an exciting week we have ahead of us… Spirit Week is here!!!

First, there is no school on Monday, October 25 for a VBFS faculty professional development day. On Monday, Friends School teachers will be starting the discussion on preparing for our 10-year VAIS re-accreditation that will occur in the fall of 2023. This is a two-year process. This year, the VBFS faculty and administration will lay the framework for the extensive self-study the school will undertake next academic year. More information on the school’s re-accreditation will be sent to the VBFS community as we get closer to the beginning of next year.

Next, below is the list of daily Spirit Day themes:

-Monday 10/25 – No School (Teacher PD Day)
– Tuesday 10/26 – Pajama Day (Dress in your comfiest pajamas, don’t forget your slippers)
– Wednesday 10/27- Pop Culture Day (Dress as your favorite character or celebrity)
– Thursday 10/28 – Decades Day (Dress up like your favorite decade)
– Friday 10/29 – Dress up for Halloween Parade!

On Tuesday, October 26 during the morning, our youngest friends in Cottage through kindergarten will be experiencing a petting zoo and pumpkin patch here at school. Beach Party Ponies will be arriving in the morning and spending two hours on campus. Early School teachers will be emailing parents directly about this event.

Friday will culminate with a mid-day Halloween Parade for friends in grades Cottage through 4th-grade. The Halloween Parade will lead to our Annual Trunk-or-Treat. Classroom teachers will lead students through the Trunk-or-Treat. Thank you to the parent volunteers who have agreed to deck out their vehicles!

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, parents are unable to attend these school day events. However, the school will take tons of photos and videos to post on our social media accounts for families to experience the fun!

Also, next Tuesday evening, the school is hosting a Parents New to Quakerism Zoom event from 6:00 to 6:30 pm. The Zoom link is below. Jeanne Crawford, School Committee Clerk and former Clerk of the Virginia Beach Friends Meeting, will be sharing her insights on Quakerism for families wanting to learn more about what it means to have their child attending a Quaker school.

Finally, I would like to again thank the entire VBFS community from the School Committee to the Meeting to parents and students, and finally to our amazing teachers for helping to create an incredible Boo-Fest. Special thanks to Candice Jarden, Sarah Combs, and Anna Canada for their hard work putting the event together. Thank you so much to our event sponsors as well! In the end, the school incredibly met its $30k goal… Way to go, Friends School!

As we look to the fall and winter, VBFS will be hosting and creating a number of other social events. The school would love the help of parents with these events. If you are interested in getting involved and want to help create more experiences like Boo-fest, please email Anna Canada, VBFS Development Director, at [email protected].

We hope everyone has a wonderful fall weekend and we all look forward to seeing students next Tuesday, October 26.

All the best,

Mike
