Happy Friday Friends!

December is upon us, can you believe it? I certainly cannot. Time has surely flown by as we ready ourselves for the winter break. This December is incredibly unique for me as it marks my 50th year on earth. If I were on my iPhone, here’s where all the crazy emoji faces would be inserted=)!

For parents and community members who have reached this milestone and beyond, I feel honored to join your club. For those youngsters who have never heard of Happy Days, have no idea what a Flux Capacitor is (Back to the Future, anyone?), and think saying, “Alright… Alright… Alright…” in a super chill laid-back Mathew McConaughey voice means you’re just “Really Good,” I apologize in advance. I definitely have a tendency to overuse ’80s and ’90s pop-culture references when speaking often confusing those I am speaking to. So, next time this happens, please excuse me and chalk it up to me now being an AARP member.

In all seriousness, turning 50 is a big deal, no matter who you are. Lately, I’ve been looking back reflecting on the last 49 years. The good, the bad, and the in-between years are all being examined. Looking to 50 and beyond, I find myself asking how can I continue to become a better person. How can I live better? Be more Zen in my thinking? Live in the moment? Not worry about those things I cannot control? Ultimately, my answers seem to be coming back to what we teach here at Friends. S.P.I.C.E.S. Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship, these values are at the heart of who I am. While I don’t live them all equally the way I wish I would or should, as I look to the future, I need to live them all more and better, simple as that.

Hopefully, with the New Year, I’ll find new answers as I try to figure out the secrets of the universe according to SPICES!

All the Best,

Mike
Head of School
