Happy Halloween Friends Families,

This past week’s wet weather has added to the feeling of fall in the air making this weekend’s Halloween celebrations even more apropos. Growing up, my Halloween costumes always leaned toward the superheroes from Saturday morning’s Super Friends cartoons and the ones on my ultra cool metal lunchbox with handy dandy thermos (now $84.99 on eBay=).

Surprisingly, the more things change, the more they stay the same. After visiting Tanya Hall’s PreK classroom Halloween celebration today, I saw Spiderman, Capt. America, Iron Man, and Hulk. Of course, they were joined by Woody, multiple princesses, a Lady Bug, and a host of other fun costumed characters. I am sure at Sunday evening’s BooFest and Monday’s Halloween Parade and Table-or-Treat, we will see a wide variety of wonderful costumes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if even more superheroes show up.

Whether it’s Superman’s, “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow,” or Spiderman’s, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Or, Black Panther’s, “Wakanda forever!” these mottos, creeds, and catchphrases are all represented in the Friends Testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship. I bet you never would have imagined, that Marvel and DC Comics and the superhero institutions they created are rooted in Quaker values (#mindblown)!

In the 1970’s I couldn’t wait to get up every Saturday morning and watch Super Friends. Today, I don’t have to wait to see super Friends. Each day, VBFS students of all ages are living out the values we want our heroes, super or not, to live by. For Friends School parents, well done in picking a school with a value system rooted in making the world a better place each and every day and creating tomorrow’s superheroes!

Happy Halloween,

Mike
