Happy Friday eve, Friends Families,

“Do you remember, the 21st night of September?” While the 21st of September was just yesterday, for those who are musically inclined, you may recognize this line from the iconic Earth, Wind, and Fire song, September. No matter where I am, who I am with, or what I am doing, when I hear September I smile.

To be honest, I am not a musical person, I’d barely call myself a creative person, but songs like September inspire me to be creative. This is the gift of musicians, artists, and actors… they create art from nothing. When you look at the lyrics of September on paper, they are barely poetic with lots of “Ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du.” However, when they are sung, the words take on an entirely new life.

Today, I walked the Breezeway and Teacher James had students drawing and creating works of art on white paper. Students were tracing sneakers, drawing the sky and flowers, creating comic books, etc. Whatever inspired them was their art for the moment. They were all creating their versions of “Ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du” on paper. And, while it may have not made sense to me, their work made complete sense to them. James teaches that art is everywhere, inspiration is everywhere, and everyone is artistic. James (and all the Friends School teachers), allows the kids to find the “Ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du-da, ba-du” in all they do.

This weekend as you enjoy the 23rd, 24th, and 25th nights of September, I hope you find the inspiration your children find every day at Friends School!

Have a great weekend!

All the best,

Mike

Head of School
