Teamwork makes the Dream work!

Without risk, there’s no reward. This mantra is at the heart of the Middle School’s annual overnight trip to Camp Silver Beach on the Eastern Shore. This past Wednesday and Thursday Friends School’s 5th through 8th-grade spent time trust falling, team building, and climbing to new heights on an Alpine Tower and High Ropes Course. The risk/reward phenomenon associated with going to Camp Silver Beach is different for every student. For the youngest students, the risk may come in being away from home for the first time EVER on an overnight trip. For the other students, the risk may come in pushing outside their comfort zone by steadfastly climbing 50 feet into the pine tree canopy risking life and limb (hyperbole parents=) acting like Spiderman on the ultra-high suspended ropes course.

Ultimately, the only way the kids even remotely come close to taking these risks is because they do them together as a team. That’s what Camp Silver Beach is all about. It’s about helping the Middle School students (faculty too) all come together as a team. It’s undoubtedly true that Silver Beach produces some tears, lots of laughs, many memorable stories, and a lifetime of confidence when the adventure comes to its end. What memories are made of, right?!

I encourage any non-middle school Friends parent to ask a middle school parent about their child’s experience at our next all-school event. I guarantee their response will be, “They LOVED it!” The love for the experience comes not in just the adventure but how the experiences make the students feel deep down inside. The Middle Schoolers’ collective teamwork made dreams come true leaving an impact that will last well beyond their time at Friends School.

Special thanks to the amazing Friends School Middle School teachers who help foster these dreams, they were amazing!

Have a wonderful weekend and stay dry,

Mike
